A stroll thru Life Between The Speakers
Az Iz -1984- A great band from Marin in the '80's. This three song demo was rehearsed in the "sweat box" for a week before coming into the studio. The 3 songs were effortlessly recorded. Listen for the Lyrical content, and tight trio backing up the singer Gino Potter. Atlantic Records offered a great deal of interest...but the band had broken up by then!!

- This song knocked me out the first time I heard it. Lyrically excellent, a very cool tune. Gino's vocals, Marks guitar sparce parts, Jay Drohan's huge backbeat (the guy was bigger than me and hit the snare so hard he once broke the shell!)
- Dancin' On My Heart- Az Iz 1984
- Song #2 from Az Iz, Gino Potter, lead vox did a great job.

- Very tight little tune. I had fun doing the backups on th is one.
- Get Yourself Over , Dino Valente 1984
- I'd have to check with Barry Flast who Produced these songs for Dino, but I think these were his last recordings before he went to that big song in the sky. From the man that brought us "Have Another Hit" with Quicksilver, and Jesse Colin Young's "C'mon People Now, Smile On Your Brother". Rumors that he wrote "Hey Joe" when he was still Chester Powers, were denied by him.

- With Barry Flast on Keyboards, and producing, it's hard to go wrong. The guy is a true vet. I believe we had Steve Evans on Bass, Greg Elmore on Drums, and ...who the heck was that guitar player?
- Somebody Wanna Leave Somebody- Dino Valente 1984
- On this song, Barry Flast hit the highest note I have ever heard a MAN hit. Listen to the Backups carefully. A hard driving edge to this song made it the hit of the group.
- Turn A Dark Cloud Over- Dino Valente- 1984
- This is a true Dino song. True to his lyrical heart, and what a big heart it was. We all miss ya man! Jolee, his son, would agree. Wouldn't ya' Kid?
- Hitch Hike, David Shorey 1978
- David Randall Shorey came to the Mill Valley Tres Virgos in 1976 to play bass for Mike Bloomfields' "Count Talent and the Originals" album produced by Normon Dayron. Dave ended up staying for about a year or so, earning his keep by playing on every session, whatever needed to be played!!! He'd play it. He is a Boston College Grad with a degree in Literature History. These early songs were recorded using "Drum Drops" off an LP. Peter Adams, the AMAZING PA, cut his teeth on engineering these. I think I mixed them. Pete's Mini Moog part is riffing away in the background. THE BACKUPS ARE DONE BY CHISTINA (now WYNONA) AND NAOMI JUDD!!

- On The Road To Redondo- David Shorey 1978
- A very haunting melody and lyric, offset by Pete Adams' great fiddle break. Pete adds accents of Mandolin, and "piano" a Yamaha CP-70 with an occasional phase shifter inserted. Dave's vocal is dry and harsh, just like the lyric wants.

- Dave "Rides The One" again here. Pete helps out on Backups and keyboards, but it's Dave's Bass and guitar that really support the lyric.

- Blue Movies - David Shorey 1978
- This is Dave's hysterical lyric about doing a Porno Soundtrack. Listen very carefully to the lyrics on this one. Pete does a great job on backups and keyboards. Dave's guitar and bass are so rythmic, his voice is about to laugh at most times.
- Save Me - Banshee with Ric Wilson- 1978
- I've known Ric Wilson since I returned from Colombia in 1971. Actually, before that he and Jackie Ryan had a band called "Early Morning Fog" that beat our band (by miles!!!) in a Battle of the Band in San Rafael, CA in about 1967. Ric's playing makes me laugh he's so good! I just hear his sense of humor in his playing and will frequently have tears on my cheeks. I have to say, that I consider him to be the penultimate lead guitarist...along with my great friend Paul Bell. Wicked, wicked Axmen both. Oh, this is Keeta Bill on vox, who I have always admired so much. Both Ric and Keeta will notice some editing I did recently. The original song was about 6:30...ok for the 70's!

- Another early Ric showcase. I wish I could remember all the other members of this band. There was like 16 of 'em, all squeezed into my little studio up on Mt Tam. Richie Moore cut the tracks and may have mixed these also. There were times that I would mix while Richie snoozed.
- Life Line- The Bohemians 1977
- My old friend Bruce Brymer brought his band to my studio. Burt West on guitar, Philly "Dawg" Dwight on Bass, Butch Engalls singing, and me on 12 string acoustic. Richie Moore engineered this one at the old place in MV and did a superb job of 8 track bouncing and pre-mixing to yield about 20 total tracks out of the 8 track, with no Noise Reduction!!!!

- This is one of mine. 6/8 is the time signature. Pete Adams on keyboards, me on guitars and bass, and I think this was Bob Jones on drums (from Mike Bloomfields band). Either him or a tlented young drummer named Mike Bowers whose Mom taught Music and College Of Marin (JAckie)
- Instant Lovin'- The Unit 1977
- One of my all time favorite bands!!! I still listen to these guys!! Roger Reid (drums. a time machine!), Kincaid Miller (keys), John Thompson on Bass and guitars, and a host of singers. I can't remember who this one is, but he sang with Geo Santanas band.
- Do Ya'- Stranger TVS Mill Valley 1977
- A great band from the East Bay fronted by Calvin McElroy. Richie Moore did all of the tracks and most of the mixing. I mixed a couple of tracks and honestly don't know which ones. But I can tell you by listening to this one that it is distinctly Richies mix. He was amazing, and taught me so much. You are missed my little Irish Elf..
